Gigantic Update

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Well…. hello everyone. Been a while eh? You may have heard through Twitter or Facebook that I’ve got a new job. It’s great! Nothing like my last lot. I think I’m going to be staying with them for a while. The perks:

  • They’re in Albion Park Rail! This means I can drive there in 25 minutes. BIG DEAL, since my last job had me catching a train for 90-100 minutes, then hiking to Glebe from Central station.
  • They sell tangible products! Not NLP which I find highly dubious.
  • I get to be part of a team, instead of having everything IT resting on my shoulders so I feel like I’m constantly under massive amounts of pressure.
  • I’m treated with respect. That’s a key thing that seemed to be lacking before.
  • I’m making about the same as before, only I don’t have to spend $57 a week on a train ticket. It’s closer to $25 a week in petrol. Oh and I get more perks because I’m an employee instead of a contractor… and they’re already deducting tax, so I won’t have a nasty surprise at the end of this financial year!

OK, so what else do I have to report? Well, what don’t I?

God knows how many goals I’ve achieved. I’ll have to do a full rundown in another post as this one will get too long.

I’ve done tons of drawing with my Wacom Cintiq (have I blogged about that yet??). It’s made it SO EASY to make cool looking drawings. I love it to bits. Look in the sidebar on the right to see a few links to images I’ve created with it.

A couple of days ago I registered the domain www.atherandearth.com. This is where my comic will live. I am still working on it, but I’m confident I’ll be able to start getting things done with it once NaNoWriMo this year is over.

Speaking of NaNoWriMo, I will be participating again in one month’s time. It will be AWESOME. I already have a fully developed plot!

Site Flight Web Design is over. I just never could get the hang of running a business. Don’t worry though, I’m not sad about it. It’s just me, I’m not cut out to be self-employed. Not enough motivation for things like that. It’s a problem I’ve had since I was about 10. Started out as a distaste for homework. Now it’s a distaste for doing things for other people while I’m at home. It feels like my personal space is being crushed, I guess. I’m happy to work while at a workplace, but I just can’t take that work home with me. Hence why I couldn’t handle working from home.

So it’s been a funny old ride, this year. It started out with me as enormously cashed up, buying cameras and expensive graphics tablets, leaving my Woolworths job, moving house, working in Sydney, ending each day feeling more drained of my sanity than the day before… then, I was unemployed, enjoying all the sudden free time but feeling lazy and sluggish and kind of doing that thing that George Costanza in Seinfeld did during the “Summer of George” – spending all my time “decompressing” by sitting idly. It got to the point where my sister tried making me do things by giving me lists because she was so upset that I seemed to be doing nothing. But I found my way.

I applied for a fateful job in late August, I got an interview, and the following Wednesday I was offered the job. I was nervous on my first day, and a bit spooked by the whole ordeal in the first few hours, where I had a whole lot of tasks bounced off me, and I was left worried about what I’d got myself into. But now that I’ve settled in, I’ve learnt that these things are doable and it seems like I’m appreciated in that workplace.

Because of my unemployment coinciding with my car needing a bunch done to it, I’m still in a bit of debt, but my job will take care of that within this month, and that’ll be a big weight off my shoulders.

Thanks to working close by, I will be able to not only join the gym next to my workplace and work out every day, but also work on my comic AND do NaNoWriMo without any problems.

This is it! This is the point in my life where everything works for me!

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Yeah, I’m a sucker for these things.

Also on Skippy’s blog was a reference to 101 things in 1001 days, a long-term goals project focusing on doing a set list of things in the ensuing 1001 days precisely. For me, the end date is going to be Friday, 5 October 2012 (calculated using this tool). That’s shortly before the Mayan apocalypse, right?

Comic-ing

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

So, it’s been a while since I first came up with my comic idea. A long while, in fact. And hey… I’ve finally started on it. Spiffers, huh?

So far, I’ve digitally inked two pages (after having sketched their drafts last night). I will only post these two pages on this blog… because I want the rest not to be spoilt when I upload the full comic book to a new website!

The comic still does not have a decisive title yet. Working title is Ather and Earth, named for the two worlds the comic visits.

Click “Continue Reading” below to see the two pages.

Ooh, Drama!

Monday, December 29th, 2008

In my years online,  I’ve been in many arguments about various things. Over time I learned that it wasn’t worth getting worked up over. Instead, it’s more fun to point and laugh.

A few hours ago, I received an email from Livejournal, where I have an account that I use to post comments and message some friends that I don’t know anywhere else.

A couple of weeks ago, I added a comment to this Livejournal post, after searching for assistance on comic drawing (ultimately I came up with the advice “try harder” and “don’t be lazy”).

Bimbo 1It’s nippletastic.

So this post shows some very chauvenistic pages from a book on how to draw Superheroes. When they talked about women, it was almost exclusively through a “sex appeal” lens. Nevermind that a stick thin woman wouldn’t make any kind of super anything, especially when you compare it to the men on the pages. On that last link, anyone else find the “keep it real” box ironic?

So, the comments were full of people complaining about how man-centric superhero comics are, and how women need to be taken more seriously and drawn realistically. You know, with muscles sometimes, and not always beautiful… maybe even with a hint of *gasp!* body fat! One woman even took it upon herself to redo the comic pages with the sexes reversed. A masterful rendering (and it took me about 20 minutes to find it too).

So, anyway. I added a comment to the end of this thread.

I came here on a search for help on drawing comics myself, like many of these people that have recently commented irrelevant things. I thought these scans were going to be helpful… then I started reading them. I found myself verbally expressing my distaste for BOTH the men and women, but particularly the women, in the pictures. This is why I don’t read comic books. I love many webcomics though, because most of the ones I read tend to draw real people.
Fortunately, as I started reading the comments, I realised that these scans were posted BECAUSE they were dehumanising to women. And that made me happy. Females that like comics need to take a stand on this. Men that just draw their masturbation fantasy woman and call it realistic need to take a good look at themselves.
This has galvanised my desire to make a comic that’s actually directed more at girls than boys. Do you think there is much of a market for teenage girls to read fantasy comics?

It was the 16th of December. I forgot about it until today, when I received this charming email:

Nattington, I have to say your post is probably one of the most self-centered pieces of garbage on this entire thread. The scans above were intended to help those who enjoy drawing superheroes or comics related as such. Your entire post simply states that you don’t have an imagination, and don’t have a single bit of interest in enjoying misconstrued reality, which is pretty much all that superheroes are about.
“Dehumanising to women”????? So all of the make-believe women in the world should retaliate against these fantasy (fantasy means ‘not real’ by the way) stereotypes shown above?
The drawings shown above are all related to the traditional sense that has been superheroes or superhero comics for a long time now. It’s an art form that has been passed down and enjoyed for quite some time as well. If you don’t like it, well then I truly do hope you make your own comic that satisfies your distaste in the current comic trend.
“Men that just draw their masturbation fantasy woman and call it realistic…”? No, it’s simply ‘realistic’ in the traditional idea of drawing people that have the same muscle groups…etc that real people have, only lifted out of proportion to make them ‘super heroes’.

Figure C: Superheroine “Nipplerella”

That’s all this is: fake. Make-believe. Fantasy. If this situation was a little different, you might be perfectly reasonable in whining about how unreal and ‘dehumanising’ the scans are. But because these were intended to be superheroes who ARE NOT supposed to be realistic in our proportions, I don’t see why the hell you bothered posting that in the first place…

This was posted as a comment in the thread, but has been screened. Here is the link, if it happens to go public.

Bimbo 2
What is this one meant to be doing, exactly?

So… somebody thinks I’m full of crap for thinking women should be respresented as real people? I think this guy also did not recognise that I would also love to see more normal looking men in comics also, instead of big beefy, godawful monstrosities that are depicted on these pages. There’s a difference between a bodybuilder and an athlete. Body builders are strong, sure, but they do not make good superheroes, because big muscles are cumbersome, and the body cannot be flexible.

It isn’t my fault that comic artists don’t think that people like reading about superheroes that look like real people. Maybe male comic geeks like to imagine themselves as these enormous super-strong towers that kick butt and make love to sultry, throwaway women. But I am not a male comic geek.

If there is something the internet has taught me, it’s that girls can be geeks just as easily as boys. The only difference is that there isn’t enough geekdom catering the female demographic. So, a lot of girls have turned to manga and anime, because they have people with normal looking bodies. Some have special powers, without having to look stupid.

Why do few girls read superhero comics? Because they are made by males, for males. They will never garner many female readers until they begin to cater for them.

I like comics. Comics made by normal people, about normal people. Until these normal people extend to superheroes (which I like the idea of, sure), I’m going to continue to criticise the generations of comic artists that read these books and think that women need to be boobular and dripping with sexuality, with three inch waists, nonexistent muscles and lips that could be used as a floatation device.

My apologies, whoever you are that wrote that comment. I’m very sorry I struck a nerve and that you think that your comment was the voice of reason in this matter. It may be fantasy, but it’s still disgusting to look at. If you were a female, you’d probably understand. Unless you bought into the whole women-as-sex-objects-are-now-women-with-”sexual-freedom” thing that’s going on in rap music video clips nowadays. In which case, I would pity you.

Natalie out.

p.s. This post marks the birth of a new Category: Mightier than the Sword. This will chronicle any future jerks that cross my path.

So… Close…

Monday, December 29th, 2008

The climax of my novel is part way through. Believe me, it is going to need desperate amounts of editing. I cannot stress that enough. I have this horrible feeling that the editing is going to end up more man hours than the initial draft.

Nevertheless, I am about 98% complete. It feels so close, and yet it’s so hard to figure it out. See, I’ve outlined up to the end of this scene I am now writing. But I need to work out what happens afterwards, which is probably an important part of the meshing of the story. Well, we’ll see what happens.

Haven’t worked on the comic in a few days, sadly. But once the novel is out of the way it’ll be much easier to work on.

Look! Another Boring Blog!

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Hey, guess what?

Natalie has started up another blog. Doesn’t that just excite you no end?

…Okay, you didn’t have to put it that way…

Look, I know I have not been known to keep up a blog, but this time it’s going to be different (groans are heard)! This time, this blog is going to bring together the vast majority of my bajillions of projects that I’m always working on simultaneously, and yet seeming to get nothing done.

Things I’ve been doing recently include:

  • NaNoWriMo
  • NaNoFiMo
  • Inventing a new webcomic and/or published comic (an actual 24-page comic book. Something I’ve never attempted before)
  • Started up this blog (duh)
  • Have plans to make a new website centred around the Illawarra Region that I somehow expect to update regularly with journalistic-esque articles (yeah, right)
  • Have been working as a freelance Web Developer/Designer, my recent work being the website for Taren Point Titans Junior Footy Club

So basically, this blog will help keep you up to date with what I’m doing, and also help me to be able to think about these things in a more organised manner. That’s one of my main problems, I think. Too disorganised.

Okay, so expect to see lots of junk posted on here, frequently! In theory.

Natalie out.
