Mixy is a pro on photography if you need to ask questions :D My SO has a Canon D450 with a 17-85mm lens ($2G total kit) and we've spent the last few weekends travelling around taking some uber photos. If you're keen, definitely get into it - life becomes art in an instant :D

See I'm yet to really learn about aperture and shutter speed. I've spent the last several hours reading about it, but when I wrote that post I would have stared at you blankly if you'd said the word "aperture" to me :P

You *can* take decent photos with a P&S, but if you really want to learn about how it all works, an SLR is the way to go. I've found that manual control over the aperture and shutter speed is more useful than manual focus (focussing manually is bloody fiddly :P).

The depth-of-field effect is also pretty hard to get with a point-and-shoot, since the cameras seem to assume that you don't want it, and the automatic settings thus won't allow it.

Mum says you need to cut back on some exercise. That is, cutting back on putting your hand to your mouth over and over again.
